Volunteer Program

Volunteers are a vital component of the day to day success of North County Women’s Shelter Programs. Volunteers help connect victims to the resources, care, and assistance they need to heal the deep wounds wrought by domestic violence. We provide volunteer opportunities that fit every volunteer’s schedule and realm of interest.

After Hours Support

Volunteers offer 24 hour support to local victims of domestic violence who call 211 Hotline in search of resources. Volunteers in this category provide informed assistance to victims who need immediate advice and comforting. At times, these volunteers help families enter the shelter after business hours. State mandated 40 hour domestic violence training is provided to all volunteers interested in participating in the after-hours support program.

Court Accompaniment

Many DV survivors must attend court hearings during the restraining order process. Court appearances make victims feel stressed, confused, threatened, and lonely. Volunteers provide court accompaniment offer victims stability and support during stressful legal hearings. A state mandated 40 hour domestic violence training is provided to all volunteers interested in participating in the court accompaniment program.

Direct Client Services

Volunteers work directly with women and children in the shelter to assist their healing process. This often includes provision transportation, childcare, and after-school tutoring. Volunteers are also needed to assist with moving and transition chores like loading and transporting belongings and furniture. General emotional support and peer counseling is also an important aspect of volunteering directly with shelter residents. All volunteers hoping to provide direct client services will be provided with a free, 40 hour domestic violence training program.

Clerical Support

Volunteers who provide clerical support work exclusively in the office to aid in daily office operations. Volunteers assist with copying, filing, bulk mailings, phones, and general office organization.

Public Awareness

A known presence in the community is the best way to ensure all victims in need know about North County Women’s Shelter services. Volunteers distribute agency brochures and media promoting our services to relevant San Luis Obispo County businesses, agencies, municipalities, and other establishments frequented by the general public. Brochure distribution occurs on an on-going, routine basis.

Fundraising

Volunteers who provide fundraising assistance help set-up and break-down event spaces, promote events, decorate venues, sell tickets, and support staff and planners with any other event specific tasks as needed.

The Women’s Shelter board formed Friends in 2002 as an auxiliary fundraising committee. Comprised of past board members, current board members, and philanthropic members of the community, Friends is in charge of all major fundraisers for the agency. The group puts on many successful events including the agency’s major annual event. Friends is a very important asset to the Women’s Shelter, as it is responsible for earning much of the mandatory matching funds required by most grantors.

The North County Women’s Shelter is always looking for excited individuals interested in planning and facilitating our vital fundraisers. If you would like to make a difference in the community by volunteering your time and expertise as a member of Friends, please contact the Women’s Shelter business office.
